The Voices in My Head

Have you ever walked past a bus station and just wondered to yourself?

“What if I just got into a random bus to a random far away place? Who would stop me? Who would ask me whether I was sure that’s where I wanted to go?”

I have had these thoughts a couple of times more so in the morning on my way to work. And weirdly the thought is so compelling but luckily the need to settle my monthly bills has always been stronger. Today I will talk about those random thoughts in our heads. And I will start with the devilish ones. Yes, I said it. We all have a little devil and Angel in us and at the end of the day. The good people are separated from the bad people depending on which is more than the other.

In every moral scenario, these two are constantly fighting one another to see who comes up on top. And depending on who wins, the devil or the angel. This can be the difference between a good and bad decision.

Take for instance. Here in Kenya, we all know how bus touts like to hang on the bus door and some of them even go as crazy as performing stunts that seem to mock death itself. So, on a couple of occasions, maybe more than I am ready to admit. I have had these random thoughts.

“What if I just pushed them?” Yes! I know. That is wrong, very wrong. But as I said we all have that little devil in us. I have had days where I have been driven in the co-driver’s seat and as much as I can’t drive to save my life. I crazily imagine just turning the steering wheel of the road. I know I am here exposing my darkest secrets lol. But, if we are all honest we have had little voices in our heads telling us to do things we wouldn’t be proud to share.

Don’t even get me started on thoughts we’ve had of other people. Nasty, filthy thoughts that we will most probably take with us to the grave. That’s why if superpowers were a thing. Mine would be reading people’s minds. That for me is the most powerful a human being can be. The data stored in a human mind for me is more precious than any gold money can buy. If you can read my mind, believe me, you can control me.

If we cannot agree on a lot of things, one thing I am sure we can all agree on is a very common voice in our heads. That shouts when we are about to make a mistake.

“Bad Idea!”

But how many times have we ignored this voice? How many times has this voice also been responsible for saving us either an embarrassing situation or a life-changing/threatening bad decision?

“I am most probably going to regret this!”

But still, we go ahead and ignore this voice and go ahead and say YOLO and make that mistake. I believe the voices in our heads are our guide through life. The moral compass for the decisions we make and also Satan’s way of having his way. If you believe in such. So, the difference between me and you is most probably how we respond to these voices.

The difference between a shy and confident person is that one most probably ignores the voices of self-doubt and the other doesn’t. The difference between a murderer and a normal person is the murderer totally disregards the Angel in their head telling them to value human life. So, what are the voices in your head? If you dare share them. How have they affected your life? Do let me know in the comments below.
