When I look back to my history with football, I remember having always been a Manchester united fan. At this point, though too early I know I might have already lost some of you on bias. I can already hear someone shouting at the top of their mind.
“Watu wa Manchester wanajua nini?”
To mean what do Manchester united fans know for my diaspora people. But do here me out, I am not here to tell you which club is the best. In fact, you can say I am here to unite fans.
Back then when I was younger my relationship with football wasn’t as strong. I remember abandoning football as I was crying a little too much for Manchester united. Again, I know some will say, nothing has changed, I here you and you have a very valid point. But I will tell you what has indeed changed.
I have grown. I have understood what love is. Perseverance, compromise, consistency, second chances, closing your ears to the haters, believing, and seeing the bigger picture. Believing in the future, seeing progress rather than completeness. And so much more. All these things are, according to me, the ingredients to becoming a loyal football fan. And as in love and relationships in general, if you cannot handle heartbreaks and disappointment, then love isn’t for you. The same can be said about football.
Yes, I have heard certain men say that they do not understand the devotion to football. That its is a waste of time. Having to deal with constant heartbreaks. The dedication to watch every single game. The loyalty despite a team’s constant bad performance.
Show me a perfect relationship, one without disappointments, disagreements, or conflicts. And I will show you where these men belong. And don’t get me wrong, there was a time when I was away from football completely. In fact, on one occasion, we were sharing a newspaper with a man on a bus. I remember how I used to read my paper. And to be honest, for a long time I saw no big deal with it. The hot news is always on the front page, so we read the paper from the front. But once I passed the paper to this man, he quickly flipped the paper to read from the back. This is where the sports news is, at least where I come from. So yeah, back or front, everyone has their preferences. Let your mind wonder. But I am here to give my hypothesis.
If you know a guy who has been supporting a team for as long as you can remember. And it even so happens that this team has had a rough couple of years. But this guy has stuck through the bad times. Are you telling me this man has no potential to be loyal in a relationship? Again, I am not saying this is a guarantee. But there is a strong chance he has an idea what loyalty feels like.
Now, there is this other guy who hops from one team to the next depending on who is at the top.
Again, feel free to read that statement again and take it as literally as you may want. Of the two men, who do you think has a better chance of prevailing in a relationship? I will let you be the judge of that.
I know some may say a certain level of addiction to football may be worrying. There are some of you ladies who even get mad because he devotes a lot of time to these matches. How when his team is playing, you seem to be just another distraction in the room. But why don’t you change your perspective and admire this devotion, commitment and loyalty and think of how you can tap into this potential.
Before you start hailing stones, just take a moment and without bias think about it. There is potential in him to be loyal and committed, you can see it through the football. So why is it not the same for the both of you? Maybe form an interest in this die had interest of his, understand what football means and does for him and maybe you will understand your role in his life as well.
So finally, this is what you all came here for. Which are these teams. The ones with all the husband material type of men. Let us be honest, you most probably already have an idea. You are just here to confirm we are talking of the same teams. So why don’t we do this, let us meet on the comment section below and share these teams and our reasons why…and before I forget. My Manchester people, perseverance. Our time is coming. We shall weather this storm.

Here on behalf of Watu wa Arsenali…it’s been a bumpy ride. But we are almost there.
Here on behalf of all the Royal Manchester United fans. Take heart my brothers.
Personally i think your analogy makes sense, but its not a guarantee. Mine is always out “watching football”.
